2011年、結成30周年を迎えたメタリカの、実に彼等らしい、彼等にしか出来ないであろう超ド級のやり方で 行われた30周年記念ライヴを、4日間丸ごと客出しS.E.までギリギリのコンプリート収録、9枚組が登場。

彼等の地元サンフランシスコの老舗の名門、キャパは僅か1,000人強のフィルモア・シアターで4日間行われた ショウは、4日間総てでプレイされたのは"Seek & Destroy"の1曲のみ、結果的に4夜トータルで何と78曲が プレイされるという前代未聞のバースデー・ステージとなりました。
4日間総てでオープニングは何とインスト・ナンバーを選曲、そして普段からステージではお馴染みのナンバーは もちろん、ライヴ用に短くアレンジされている"No Remorse" や "The Four Horsemen"は、20数年振りに レコーディングの音源通りのミドル・パートもしっかりとプレイするといった徹底振り。この日の為に初めて プレイするリ・ロードからの"Carpe Diem Baby"や、フル・レングスではお初の"To Live Is to Die"、最新アルバム "Death Magnetic"からの未発表アウト・テイク(全4曲)も、再度聞き返して練習を重ね、コアなファン達の為だけに 惜しみなく披露してくれています。

そして超目玉となったゲスト陣営も豪華絢爛！！メタリカがカバーしたアーティストはもちろんの事、彼等に 絶大なインスパイアを与えた、メタリカの歴史を語る上で絶対に欠く事の出来ない、偉大なアーティスト達も招かれ、 この日のステージの為だけにサンフランシスコに集結しました。
総ては書き切れませんが、幾度となくステージで共演を果たしているBrian TatlerとSean HarrisのDiamond Head組、 デンマークが誇るカルト・メタル・バ ンド、King Diamond 率いるMercyful Fate、メタル・ゴッドRob Halford、 賛否両論LoutallicaからLou Reed、マイクがハウろうがどうなろうが、縦横無尽に俺流のステージングで圧倒した Glenn Danzig、そして偉大なるヘヴィ・メタル・バンドBlack Sabbathからはメタル・アイコンOzzy Osbourneと Geezer Butler の2人が登場。40年余りも歌い続けている自身の持ち歌"Paranoid"ですら、歌詞をガン見して 歌い続け、曲展開を促すジェイムズのアイ・コンタクトをも無視してオーディエンスを煽り続けるオジーに、 思わず苦笑いのジェイムズが印象的なヘヴィなお祭りテイクと化しています。

また、ファンが最も狂喜乱舞した瞬間、14年振りにメタリカのステージで、あの大粒の汗を流しに帰って来た ジェイソン・ニューステッド、かつては袖を分かつ仲となってしまったオリジナル・ギタリスト、現メガデスの デイヴ・ムステインも満を持して登場！1st アルバム「血染めのハンマー」から自 身の作曲クレジットが入っている 3曲含む全4曲でデイヴ節全開のメタリックなソロを弾き倒しています。

ジェイムズがステージ上でモニタリングしているソースと同等の、ノイズレス な非圧縮IEM(イン・イヤー・ モニター)ソースと、フロント・ロウからのクリアーでバランスの良い24bitオーディエンス・マテリアルとを 完全フル・マトリックスを施し、表情豊かな奥行きと厚みのある三次元サウンドで、当日のフィルモアの熱気を 完全再現!!
バンドのダウンロード音源にも敬意を表しつつ、それとの差別化を計る為、あえてオーディエンス音源の比率を 大きく残し、小劇場特有の響きと臨場感、そしてオーディエンス達の歓声の生々しさを随所に残しつつ、 ダイレクト感をも損なわない様に、曲ごとに比率を変えて絶妙のバランスでミックスを施しました。
(特に"Seek & Destroy"での風船の割れる音*には失笑を禁じ得ない程のマッシヴなアグレッシヴ度合いです。 *風船の中に記念メダルが入っていた為に一斉に風船狩りが行われた為の行為です。)
またダウンロード音源では編集が施さ れているM.C部分も、こちらでは未編集のまま手付かずで完全収録。

ボーナス音源として、DISC3に当日ステージが始まる前に企画された「クリフの思い出を語るコーナー」も 4日間分総てを収録。ジェイムズが、カークが、スコット・イアンが、クリフのお父さんが、その思いを秘話を 交えて語ってくれています。(こちらはオーディエンス・ソースのみのマテリアルになります。)

レーベルの思いが120%詰まった、誰も が納得の素晴らしいサウンド・プロダクションとなっています。
